2003 Scholarship Winners SONIA ALVES The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Sonia Alves of West Hartford, Connecticut, to receive a scholarship award. Sonia is a senior at Hall High School and plans to attend college in the fall of 2002 with the goal of pursuing a career in the nursing field. She is the daughter of Maria T. Rodrigues of West Hartford, Connecticut. Her family traces its ancestry to Couto, Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. DANNY T. CARREIRA The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Danny T. Carreira of Hartford, Connecticut, to receive a scholarship award. Danny is a senior at Hartford High School and plans to enroll in college this fall to study digital media and computer science. Danny is the son of Maria Carreira of Hartford. The Carreira family traces its ancestry to Rio Seco, Beira Baixa, Portugal. JENNIFER COSTA The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Jennifer Costa of Newington, Connecticut, to receive a scholarship award. Jennifer is a freshman at the University of Connecticut majoring in accounting with the goal of becoming a certified public accountant. She is the daughter of Eduardo and Ada Costa of Newington, Connecticut. The Costa family traces its ancestry Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal. KATIE ANN DaCOSTA The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Katie Ann DaCosta of Hartford, Connecticut, to receive a scholarship award. Katie is a senior at Bulkeley High School and plans to enroll in college this fall to study biology and education. She plans a career in teaching. Katie is the daughter of Armando DaCosta. The DaCosta family traces its ancestry to Portugal. KELLY PESTANA The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Kelly Pestana of East Hartford, Connecticut, to receive a scholarship award. Kelly is a senior at East Hartford High School. She plans to enroll in college this fall and will major in international business. Kelly is the daughter of Rui and Maria Pestana. The Pestana family traces its ancestry to Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. JOSEPH S. RAMOS The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Joseph S. Ramos of North Haven, Connecticut, to receive a scholarship award. Joseph is a senior at North Haven High School and plans to enroll in college this fall to pursue a Pre-med degree with the goal of a career as a physician. Joseph is the son of Jose and Orinda Ramos of North Haven. The Ramos family traces its ancestry to Tras os Montes, Portugal. NATERCIA RODRIGUES The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Natercia Rodrigues of East Hartford, Connecticut, to receive a scholarship award. Natercia is a freshman at Mount Holyoke College majoring in the Pre-med program studying biology and biochemistry. She plans a career in internal medicine and oncology. She is the daughter of Eduardo and Maria Rodrigues of East Hartford, Connecticut and the family traces its ancestry to Cunha Alta and Moitas-Venda, Portugal. MONICA SOARES The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Monica Soares of Waterbury, Connecticut, to receive a scholarship award. Monica is a graduate student at the University of Connecticut. She plans to obtain a masters degree in Communication Disorders and Speech Pathology. Monica was born in Portugal and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 10. She is the daughter of Margarida S. Gomes and Carlos A. Soares. The family traces its ancestry to Aveiro, Vila da Feira, Portugal.
