The President's Message - 2004
In a report on the establishment of the Smithsonian Institution, President John Quincy Adams wrote: "To furnish the means of acquiring knowledge is … the greatest benefit that can be conferred upon mankind. It prolongs life itself and enlarges the sphere of existence." The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. continues to embody this noble goal as it enters into its 13th year of awarding scholarships to deserving students of Portuguese ancestry. As these students move on through their higher education and into their professional lives, the Portuguese culture is woven into the fabric of the American experience. In that manner, the mission of the Portuguese Foundation to disseminate the Portuguese culture is met. The Foundation's goals remain focused as when the first President of the Foundation, my brother John, wrote in the 1993 Scholarship Banquet Booklet: "The same conviction and tenacity that propelled our ancestors across vast, unknown oceans today propels our 'quiet, hardworking' Luso-American neighbors to the factory, the foundry, the construction area, the laundry room. And the goal is the same - to discover a New World, not the riches of India and China, but a New World of opportunity and achievement for our children." The Foundation is honored to have joined our "quiet, hardworking Luso-American neighbors" in their quest to help their children achieve their goals. To our winning students, I leave you this message: higher education and obtaining knowledge is ever more crucial in the world we live in today. Knowledge is a powerful tool, one that strikes mortal fear into oppressive or paranoid leaders. Armed with knowledge, humans can gain a better understanding of different cultures, learn from one another, and thereby benefit mankind and achieve global peace and harmony. I urge you to put the scholarship award you receive today to good use. Arm yourselves with knowledge. Participate. Ask questions. Read between the lines. Learn. Enrich your world. Enrich our world. When you establish yourselves in the professional world, remember the Portuguese Community, whether it be with the Church, the Club, and yes, the Portuguese Foundation. Give back to those who supported you, monetarily or with your time. You will find it quite fulfilling to do so. Above all, remember to think globally, but act locally. Numa das dependências da Smithsonian Institution existe um dístico do Presidente John Quince Adams que diz: " Fornecer meios de adequerir instrução e … o maior benefício que se pode atribuir sobre o homem. Prolonga a vida propriamente dita e alarga a esfera da existência." The Portuguese Foundation, Inc continua a incorporar a nobre função de auxílio e concretização de sonhos e, estamos chegados ao décimo terceiro ano de contemplar com bolsas de estudo os nossos concorrentes e merecedores estudantes, de descendência portuguesa. E assim que estes estudantes completarem os seus estudos superiores e se integrarem nas suas vidas profissionais, a cultura portuguesa fica entrelaçada no tecido da experiência Americana. E dessa maneira, a missão da Portuguese Foundation para a divulgação da cultura portuguesa alcançou a sua meta. As expectativas da Foundation continuam focadas tal como o foram quando em 1993, o seu primeiro presidente, o meu irmão John, escreveu o seguinte no booklet do primeiro Scholarship Banquet : "A mesma convição e tenacidade com que os nossos antepassados navegaram através de vastos e desconhecidos oceanos, hoje, os nossos silenciosos e bons trabalhadores navegam para fábricas, áreas de construção, lavandarias, e a expectativa é a mesma - descobrir um Novo Mundo, não como o das riquezas da India ou China, mas um Novo Mundo de oportunidades e sucesso para as nossas crianças." A Foundation honra-se de se ter associado aos nossos silenciosos vizinhos, Luso-Americanos, bons trabalhadores, no seu esforço de alcançar o sucesso de seus filhos. A vós, estudantes, deixo-vos uma mensagem: O estudo superior e a aquisição de conhecimentos é hoje mais crucial do que nunca, no Mundo onde vivemos. Uma boa educação é instrumento poderoso que pode atacar e intimidar governos opressivos e paranoicos. Armados com sabedoria, nós humanos, podemos adequerir um melhor conhecimento de outras culturas, aprendendo uns dos outros e, portanto, beneficiar a humanidade, alcançando paz e harmonia global. Urjo-vos que ponham em bom uso a bolsa de estudo com que foram hoje premiados. Preparem-se com uma boa educação. Partecipem, façam perguntas. Procurem ler entre linhas. Enriqueçam a vossa palavra. Enriqueçam o nosso Mundo. Lembrai-vos quando vos estabelecerdes no mundo profissional de não esquecer a Comunidade Portuguesa. Ajudai monetariamente ou com o vosso tempo aqueles que vos ajudaram; quer seja a igreja, o clube e, certamente a Portuguese Foundation. Ao ajudardes quem vos ajudou vereis como será grande a satisfação própria.
