2010 Scholarship Winners

Kayla S. FonsecaKFonseca

The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Kayla S. Fonseca of Watertown, Connecticut to receive a scholarship award. Kayla is a freshman at Sacred Heart University where she has participated in a leadership seminar and a service learning program. She also is a dancer with the Force Team and is a volunteer with Relay for Life. She is the daughter of José L. Fonseca and Elizabeth Fonseca. Kayla traces her ancestry to Bragado, Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Portugal.

AGomesAndrea L. Gomes

The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Andrea L. Gomes of South Glastonbury, Connecticut to receive a scholarship award. In 2009, Andrea graduated with honors from New York University receiving a Bachelor of Arts in History and Anthropology. She was the Peer Education Advocacy Chair for the Peer Education Council at NYU and participates in the Lawyer Alumni Mentoring Program. Her future plans are to attend the University of Connecticut School of Law in the fall. She is the daughter of Vasco and Filomena Gomes of Glastonbury, Connecticut. Andrea traces her Portuguese ancestry to Reguengo do Fetal, Portugal and Vila do Porto, Santa Maria, Azores.

AQuentalAngela S. Quental

The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Angela S. Quental of Newington,
Connecticut to receive a scholarship award. Angela is a senior at Newington High School where she is ranked at the top of her in a class. She has received the Smith College Book Award, the Cammy O’Connor Book Award and the William P. Ward Humanitarian Prize. She helped organize a benefit concert at Newington High School which raised over $2,000.00 for Operation Smile which provided free cleft lip and palate surgeries. She is a member of the choir at Our Lady of Fatima Church of Hartford and a member of the Ranho Foclorico at the Portuguese Club of Hartford. Her future plans are to attend college in the fall. She is the daughter of David and Irene Quental of Newington. The Quental family traces its ancestry to Vale de Cambra, Portugal.

DReisDaniel R. Reis

The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Daniel R. Reis of East Hartford,
Connecticut to receive a scholarship award. Daniel is a sophomore at the University of Connecticut where he has maintained a career GPA of over 3.8. In addition to his studies, he has been active in the Portuguese community of Hartford as an altar server at the Our Lady of Fatima Church of Hartford, a volunteer for the Sao Martinho Festa held at the Portuguese Club of Hartford, and is employed at Antunes Caterers. He is the son of David and Isilda Reis of East Hartford, Connecticut. David’s family traces its ancestry to Reguengo do Fetal, Portugal

LTeixeiraLiana M. Teixeira

The Portuguese Foundation, Inc. has selected Liana M. Teixeira of West Haven, Connecticut to receive a scholarship award. Liana is a senior at West Haven High School where she is ranked fifth out of a class of 362. She is a founding member of Academic Integrity Committee at West Haven High School. She has received awards for four separate writing essay contests and received the highest score on the National Advanced Placement Program Exam. Her future plans are to attend college in the fall. She is the daughter of Luis and Ana Teixeira of West Haven, Connecticut. Liana’s family traces its ancestry to Valpaços, Portugal.
